George T. Thurmond
George "Tommy" Thurmond was born in Hollandale Mississippi in November of 1949. He was introduced to the painting ideas of Henry Hensche by Professor Sammy Britt at Delta State University in 1968.
In the late summer of 1969, George and fellow painting student Gerald Deloach came to Provincetown on motorcycles for their first encounter with Henry Hensche. The powerful impression that Hensche made — both the man and his paintings — started Tommy's more than twenty-year association with Henry Hensche, an association that ended only with the master's death on December 10, 1992.
Tommy then rededicated himself to an in-depth study of Hensche's teachings, paintings, and work to apply that visual perceptual education to painting. Study almost daily, and truthful accuracy, not factual accounting, briefly describes Tommy's painting approach.
Other important assisstance with his painting education came from George Copeland, John Hamrick, Sammy Britt, and especially Charles Miller of Memphis Tennessee.
As the artist himself says, "Color is nature's glory, never mundane, always beautiful whether in blazing sunlight or in her most subtle moment of mist and fog."
Tommy Thurmond is a full time painter. He has resided in northeast Mississippi for twenty-six years.
